Last week I had the opportunity to attend a Suffolk University Women in Business event, a forum for female Business students to come together each week and listen to dynamic guest speakers. On this occasion, the featured speaker was Katrina Melesciuc, Co-founder of a tech and innovation startup called Women’s iLab (or Women’s Innovation Lab). With her startup all about empowering women, I wanted to share a few things I took away from her inspiring story.

Empower yourself

“Nothing gets better than doing what you love & are passionate about as your job,” which is why Katrina helped develop Women’s iLab.The platform is focused on driving innovation and encouraging women to empower themselves by supporting one another and creating their own brands.

[Empower Yourself] was the first critical step for Katrina that helped her succeed in creating Women’s iLab. There will always be skeptics and naysayers when you’re first starting a business, but you need to have a mindset of “Keep Moving Forward.” You will frequently ask yourself questions & iterate the product but keep the things you value at the core.

Feminism – It’s not a bad thing

Recently, large companies and famous women have chosen to cultivate the topic of Feminism- take Pantene, Sheryl Sandberg and Beyonce for example. During the 1960s & 70s, feminism was a sensitive topic to touch on but, because of today’s actions taken by prominent figures, the conversation has become bolder, larger, and more encouraging.

Having a determined mindset and confident attitude became Katrina’s greatest assets in establishing Women’s iLab. She empowered herself with a positive, learning attitude, asking herself “What is the next thing for me to learn?” keeping what she valued at the core — equality.

You can make an impact by standing by what’s important to you

Working towards a cause that you value can create a powerful impact. In this case, Women’s iLab is making a major impact for gender equality as a collaborative space for women to write about what is important to them, share innovative ideas with each other, and most importantly, create and build their personal brand.

In creating your personal brand, think about your beliefs that matter most, stay true to them as things change and you may just inspire some one to start their story!
